Modern Arnis
Modern Arnis is a Filipino martial art developed by Grandmaster Remy Presas. It is known for its use of single sticks, double sticks, knives, and emptyhand drills, forms, and techniques. It was developed from both filipino, and Non-Filipino (Karate, Judo, Small circle Jujitsu) techniques. At VSMA you will learn a version of Modern Arnis consisting of techniques from both Remy Presas and Master Frank Shekosky (Sensei Joe's teacher). VSMA is a proud member of Connecticut Modern Arnis Jujitsu, an organization stated by Master Shekosky. Please see Sensei Joe or Sensei Keith to sign up.

Parker's Self Defense
Parker's Self Defenseis a system of martial arts characterized by rapid fire self defense combination designed to overwhelm an opponent. It is known for being a very effective self defense system. It is derived from the teachings of William Chow, and various oter sources. Parker introduced many modifications to the system including principles, theories and concepts of motion. This use of motion is what makes the system so devastating. At VSMA, you will learn the vast majority of the system. The whole system can be taught during private lessons for those that are interested. Please see Sensei Joe or Sensei Keith for more details.

Combat Judo & Jujitsu:
Sensei Baron’s Combat Arts U.S.A. Judo & Jujitsu is an evolved system of Judo and Jujitsu techniques; the movements are comprised of realistic reactionary body movements that are instinctive and practical for today’s Self Defense applications. This system is a recognized style and registered with the U.S.M.A.A. under Porter Sensei, President. Master Barone has taught this system thru adult education programs, physical fitness facilities, and The Police Activity League of Nassau County N.Y. This system is always evolving and striving to bring the best techniques of Judo and Jujitsu to the practitioner!

Taijiquan (T’ai Chi Ch’uan):
Today Taijiquan is practiced more for its health benefits, including stress relief, increased balance and coordination, improved immune system, and overall well being. However, it is a martial art training system dating back hundreds of years. The movements of the Taijiquan form sequence are a type of “shadow boxing”, moving against an imaginary opponent. Although we will be concentrating on the health aspects of the training in this class, martial and self-defense applications will be demonstrated and practiced to help understand the principles. The form set students will be learning in this class is based on Cheng Man-Ching’s 37-Posture Yang-Style T’ai Chi Ch’uan Short Form. The class will also include warm-up exercises and a Qigong routine.

Cardio / Aerobics Classes:
All the rage at fitness centers around the country, this workout borrows moves from the Thai sport of kickboxing to make participants work up a sweat. Hedy Watrous will lead the group through specific punches and kicks, usually to the beat of music. The moves are worked into swiftly executed combinations (for example: jab, cross punch, hook, uppercut, front kick).
